Artist in Residence at Trinity Buoy Wharf

I'm absolutely thrilled to have been appointed Artist in Residence at Trinity Buoy Wharf, starting in November 2024 and running through to London Craft Week in May 2025. I'm so excited to have this opportunity to shine a light on the expertise within the Wharf community and make audiences curious about what people do there.

Trinity Buoy Wharf is an Arts and Creative community based by the confluence of the River Thames and The River Lea at Bow Creek. It has a rich Marine History, many historic buildings including a Lighthouse, and Container City the innovative home of many creative businesses. I'm looking forward to meeting more of the Artists and Makers based there and discovering their stories.

I’m a passionate advocate for the value of making because being able to make things has really shaped who I am, it gave me a sense of identity and self-worth as a young person. I now make work that reflects how proud I am to be a member of a creative community of people who make things.

I’m excited to be part of the Trinity Buoy Wharf community to be making a body of work informed by interactions with the community over the period of the residency. I will create a physical visual diary, comprised of stitched works and drawings. During the period of the residency, I will be delivering a series of workshops and there will be an exhibition at the end to coincide with London Craft Week 2025

Shining a light on people and places that are overlooked, through the act of making is an important part of my practice. The project might look at Artist and Makers within the studios, Students or Tutors from the teaching settings, those renovating SS Robin or even interesting people from the archives. For me one of the key outcomes is an expression of the feeling that making things is important and the people that makes things are important too.

I’m concerned about the position of making in the hierarchy of skills we value as a society and how this is exacerbated by the decline of art and making, particularly in state schools. Part of the residency will be to work with schools and young people. I anticipate these workshops will start in the new year. Throughout November I will be in Orchard café on Tuesday mornings 10-12 for drop in sketch and stitch meet ups, all welcome. Materials and ideas provided, or bring something you are already working on.
